At the upcoming Board of Education meeting on August 27, 2024; the Board will discuss the importance of reporting incidents of bullying and complying with Board policy. Policies which will be discussed are Bullying Policy, Bullying/Harassment Reporting and Investigation Procedures (along with supporting documentation), Discipline Policy, and Dress Code Policy. The board will also discuss how to make the process more efficient and responsive to the community. The Board will allow questions that may help modify these policies for better effectiveness. The Board cannot open the discussion up to statements by the public that might create issues with student confidentiality, employee confidentiality, and due process. The reasons for this confidentiality is following: • When someone describes an incident that may or may not be bullying, that person would use names or descriptions of students, that are victims, perpetrators or both. The identification of students is a problem because the school district has an obligation to protect the confidentiality of student information under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act among other laws. The information needs to be reported in the manner required by District policy in order to protect the confidentiality of students. • In addition, statements alleging wrongdoing intentional or otherwise by an employee, when the employee has not received notice of the allegations, raises potential due process issues that are avoidable by following district reporting policies. If you have concerns with alleged wrongdoing by an employee, please direct questions and concerns to the superintendent. The Board wishes to find an effective way to stop bullying in the school. Bullying should be reported every time it happens! In order to address bullying effectively every incident should be reported and documented as soon as it is observed. Following the McCurtain Public School Bullying policy helps assure that incidents are properly identified, reported, and processed. Please become familiar with our policy, if you are not already, and the reporting process so that we can work together to address and put a stop to bullying.
